The World of Pure Breed Dog Information at Your Fingertips and more!

The Irish Terrier makes a good companion and can be trained to be a very useful guard dog. He will ideally fit the bill for anyone requiring a terrier larger than a Fox Terrier and yet smaller than an Airedale Terrier .

Irish Terriers are very endearing dogs. Their deep affection and faithfulness to their owners is unusual for a dog that is lively, full of intelligence and very game. Their love for and gentleness with children is a very marked characteristic and it is a delight to watch them with babies and young children. They are very adaptable and excel as a family pet or as a "one man" dogs. Few people who have owned a really typical "Mick" ever desert the breed completely.

Of their characteristics it cannot be too strongly emphasised that they are essentially happy natured dogs with a great sense of humour. They have a delightful trick of smiling which, unfortunately has often been mistaken by those who are under the impression that they are bad tempered dogs as bearing their teeth in anger.

While being good tempered with the family and most suitable, as has been stated before, with children, the "Irishman" is not averse to having a go with other dogs if the occasion arises or if he is provoked. In our kennels, if there is a fight going on (which is rare) even the mildest Irish in sight will enter in and thoroughly enjoy himself! The Irish Terrier is really no worse fighter than any other terrier breed perhaps they enjoy it more.

The Irish Terrier has a harsh wiry coat which requires a certain amount of attention, although not to the extent of the Wire Fox Terrier or Airedale Terrier. Built on graceful lines, rather more racy than other breeds of terriers, he is whole-coloured either red or red-wheaten. The Irish Terrier stands around 19 inches for males and 18 inches for females at the shoulder, and weighs about 27 pounds. He needs a fair amount of exercise, enjoys long walks and a good game with a ball.

If interested in buying an Irish Terrier puppy, go the a reputable breeder to see puppies where you will see the mother and hopefully the father. The breeder will issue you with a diet chart, worming & vaccination certificate, registration papers and information on how to care for your Irish Terrier from puppy hood through to being an adult. The breeder will also offer an "After Sales" service with regard to stripping the coat at regular intervals and any questions asked will be helpfully answered.
