The World of Pure Breed Dog Information at Your Fingertips and more!

The name GORDON SETTER was given to the breed due to its close links with the fourth Duke of Gordon and his ancestral home in Scotland at Gordon Castle. The Duke had a strong kennel of working dogs in the early 1800's and he was known to favour the beautifully marked Black and Tan Setters.

Black and Fallow dogs were mentioned in early writings from the 17th century and although others were bred along different lines from the Duke of Gordon's dogs the breed has been named in his honour as one of its main founders.

The Gordon Setter has a character all of his own, he is quick and alert but neither aggressive nor shy. Not a dog that adapts well to a life in a kennel ,but one who needs and demands attention for his proper development. The Gordon returns love and attention with an unwavering loyalty which is rarely found in other breeds. He has a strong protective sense towards members of his family and home, but usually will readily adopt his owners attitude to strangers or visitors. This extreme loyalty and intelligence makes the Gordon an excellent pet as well as one who has a record of success in both obedience and field work, his coal black coat set off by rich chestnut marking makes him an eye catching show dog as well.

BRINGING UP YOUR GORDON SETTER
As the owner of a Gordon Setter you will need to make sure that your dog does not cause problems for others by Ä proper housing, feeding, exercise and discipline training. Gordons need lots of your time and company.

HOUSING:
A properly safe, fenced yard and a bed in a draught free area is a must.

LEGAL:
The law requires that your dog be under control at all times. YOU are responsible for cleaning up after your dog when it fouls a public place. YOU are required to register your dog with your local Council when it reaches six months of age

HEALTH:
Regular exercise, grooming and a good diet, worming and vaccination program are essential for the health of your dog. HEAT STRESS can kill your dog. Do not leave your dog in a car or trailer for even a few minutes, even if the windows are down. Cars can become furnaces even in the shade. To cool your dog put him in the shade, DO NOT put wet towels on his back, you decrease the amount of air circulating and cause him to retain heat. Cool him by placing the dog on a cool wet surface. Increase air movement around him with fans.
