INTRODUCTION
The pendulous ears, soft gentle expression, sturdy build and friendly wagging tail proclaim the English Springer Spaniel unmistakably as a member of the ancient family of spaniels. The English Springer Spaniel is the largest of the land Spaniels, and was originally used to find and spring game for the nets, or falcon carried by hunters.
Every inch a sporting dog, the Springer is a medium size animal with a neat, compact body and docked tail. The attractive liver and white or black and white coat, with or without tan markings, with or without ticking, is moderately long and glossy with moderate feathering on his legs, ears, chest and brisket. A tireless worker in the field with great tenacity and endurance, the English Springer Spaniel is probably the best choice for the sportsman who wants one dog only, as an all purpose gun dog. The Springer is actively represented in Obedience, Agility, Field Trials and Conformation.
A people's dog, he thrives on human companionship. Playful and patient with children, he loves nothing better than romping around and taking part in their games. The English Springer Spaniel needs as much good hard exercise as he can get, and in addition to the usual running and galloping, thoroughly enjoys the chance to have a swim. He should not just be shut out in the backyard and left to his own devices. Puppies in particular get very bored and wilful if deprived of company.
Although normally fairly quiet, the Springer nevertheless makes good guard dog. The English Springer Spaniel stands approx. 51cms (20 inches) at the shoulder and weighs around 23kg (501bs).
Exercise
While they might prefer five acres and their own pond, many Springers thrive in a city setting. After the dog matures, brisk walks and ball chasing can keep the Springer in excellent shape. The amount of exercise a Springer needs varies widely for individual dogs.
REMEMBER COUCH POTATOES NEED TO MOVE, TOO!
Health
Springers generally enjoy robust good health, thriving on exercise. They love the water and brisk walks, yet can adjust to a quiet city life. They do need human companionship, though they can snooze all day while the owners are at work, as long as they get good attention and exercise when the owners are at home. Keeping the mature dog's weight within the standard guidelines will optimise health.
Ears
Check and clean on a regular basis. Remember preventative checks are the best cure.
Allergies
Some Springers may have an allergy to certain grasses, and fleas. This should be checked on a regular basis. Check with your Vet.
