THE DALMATIAN
An elegant breed of ancient lineage. The picturesque spotting of the Dalmatian makes this breed the most distinctive of dogs. In Victorian times, the Dalmatian gained a reputation as a carriage dog and ran with the horses, either out in front, beside, or behind the carriage of the Nobility. In those days the Dalmatian had a natural affinity with horses, a trait that is still very strong today. Place most Dalmatians anywhere near a horse and they will immediately go and greet him. No one could ever mistake him with his black or liver spots, his streamlined muscles, and energetic dash. Elegance and humour are the hallmarks of the breed. He is a fun-loving natural clown. His "smile" is often taken for a snarl, until one spots the furiously wagging tail.

Cleanliness and a minimum of grooming attention are other characteristics of the breed. Having a short dense coat, they need only an occasional brushing to present a well groomed appearance. A dog needs only to be bathed before showing and he is ready for the ring.

A hint of the exclusive marks the Dalmatian from other dogs. He is the only dog with spots. Pups are born pure white and begin to acquire their spots at about two weeks. The Dalmatian is perfect for a man who wants a companion for himself, a watchdog for his property, and a marvelous pet for his family. Being a strong active dog, he needs to be kept under control. His fairly sensitive nature also craves human company and affection. He will challenge any stranger until the newcomer is accepted by his owner, and then he will accept him. The Dalmatian is relatively free from inherited problems compared to some breeds, however his unique liver and kidney may predispose him to bladder stones, and as with other white coated dogs, some individuals are prone to skin trouble, or deafness.

In terms of dog psychology, any dog that has been a drover of cattle, been a trekker in two world wars and the Vietnam war, earned a place on the dashing red fire engine, been the darling of the Victorian dandy, a show dog, a trick dog, a gun dog, and, in the olden days, a hunter, need only be given half a chance in this modern life and he will win a place in your heart and your life.
