WHY A COLLIE
Because of our famous relative LASSIE!
We are sweet natured, gentle and affectionate; because of this we have a particular understanding of ones own moods, being happy or sad with you as your mood demands.
Today's Collie has not much chance of doing his natural job, so they turn their instincts to different channels. Every Collie as a house dog will most certainly make a "career" for himself in one way or another. He may decide to make himself useful by being an understanding companion or a "Nanny" to the family.
We are an inside and outside dog and love access to a securely fenced backyard, so we can play with our toys and chase balls that you throw. We love it if you take us for walks, or even if you would like us to go to obedience school to learn good manners. We learn very quickly and like to please.
We are not fussy eaters, so if you start us off with the right food, recommended by our breeder we will grow into beautifully healthy dogs.
GROOMING
Yes we require a certain type of regular grooming! The tools you will require are a good quality pin brush and a metal comb. Lay your dog down on it’s side and lifting the fur from the tummy area brush the coat down towards you in layers, going all over the dog. Pay particular attention to the thick coat around the neck and tail area. With your comb, comb the long silky hair behind the ears and the leg feathers. We do not require regular bathing, but if you do bath your dog please make sure he is dried off in reasonably quick time. If your dog requires a more pleasant odour, take some baby powder and brush it through his coat (outside please) and let him shake, this will remove the dogs odour without bathing. You may trim the long fur from around the bottom of the feet with scissors.
SO YOU WANT A COLLIE!
There is no excuse for buying a puppy from the pet shop or market. When you buy from a dedicated breeder, who is breeding for future champions, you have a better chance of acquiring a well bred, properly raised puppy offered at a fair price. Although not all the litter will be SHOW quality, they should still all have the excellent show temperament, which makes the Collie an excellent pet. Many breeders recommend that you spay or neuter their pets. This way, you will have the best pet possible.
SO YOU WANT TO BREED!
Breeding is not mating together two registered dogs to produce puppies. It is a creative art that requires the study of genetics, conformation, bloodlines and veterinary procedures. The responsibility for future generations lies with the breeder. The mating of outstanding champions will produce many pets, so if dogs that are not outstanding are bred, can you imagine what will happen as time goes on to the beautiful Collie. A healthy well adjusted dog is bred for; it doesn't just happen! Please consider carefully.
SO YOU WANT TO SHOW!
A "Show Dog" is a rare animal that with proper training, nutrition, environment, coat-care and handling, can and does win in the confirmation ring. As such an animal is obviously most select, much sought after, it is generally beyond the scope of most "pet" breeders. All puppies look cute and this breed is notorious for changing. Buy from a breeder who is producing and showing their own stock. They have the expertise and experience to recognise the potential of a puppy. But there are no guarantees. But they will help you learn the ropes of ring craft.
A COLLIE OR NOT A COLLIE!
Now you know a little about the Collie and have decided this is the dog for you. Talk to ethical breeders referred to you by the affiliated Collie Club in your State. Go to Dog Shows and Obedience Trials. Do not be in a hurry. Good things come to those who wait. Reputable breeders do not have puppies available all the time, but their puppies will be worth waiting for.
