THE BREED
As the name suggests the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel proudly traces its ancestry back to the Royal Courts of England and to Blenheim Palace.
Beyond that the dogs of Spain and Holland were of the 'spaniel' type and were popular as 'comforters' or ladies' dogs. The Merry Monarch Charles 11 was devoted to his dogs almost to the point of addiction. They
traveled with him everywhere and the sign "Beware of the Dog" probably originated in his court meaning not that they were dangerous, but ‘Don’t tread on them!" Contrary to popular belief they do not have free access to all Royal Parks, Palaces and Public Buildings in England; they just behave as if they do and it wouldn't do to disillusion them.
TEMPERAMENT:
VITAL, ENERGETIC, EBULLIENT, ACTIVE, LOVING, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is the perfect family dog. But it must be stressed, they are dogs that belong with people. They are not dogs to be left alone or housed outside as they thrive on human contact. Subsequently they are dogs that are most suited to family circumstances or for retired people. Apart from all their excellent qualities they do drop coat twice per year and have poor road sense so outside the well fenced family property, they should be kept on a lead.
POTENTIAL OWNERS
If you are contemplating buying a Cavalier please make certain that your fences are secure. All dogs will dig when young and will find the way out if it is possible.
All affiliated Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Clubs will happily offer advice to prospective owners, and invite you to observe the Cavaliers at shows where you can meet with owners and breeders to discuss temperament and type before you purchase. The Clubs strongly recommend that all owners belong to the Australian National Kennel Council through their affiliated state counterparts . Breeders who belong to these bodies are bound by a Code Of Ethics and will offer support and advice to all new owners.
Puppies are not always readily available, you may have to be placed on a waiting list. That is the time to find out more about the breed. The Clubs keep listings of puppies as supplied by breeders. The Secretaries will talk with you about purchasing a puppy and will be able to tell you where puppies are available. The breeder will discuss with you whether you want a "Show Quality" or a "Pet Quality" pup.
RESCUE SERVICE
The Clubs operate a Rescue Service. These dogs (usually adults) are available for re-housing and often make wonderful pets.
LIFE SPAN
When contemplating a dog, please realise that you are taking it on for its life time. Cavaliers live from between 10 to 15 years of age.
DISEASES
Cavaliers are a healthy breed. Puppies will have been inoculated by a VET. Annual checks and inoculation are essential as is regular worming. Your VET will explain the dangers of heart Worm and explain the preventative measures. Certain weeds and grasses may have adverse affects.
BITCHES ON HEAT
Bitches can come 'in season' from six months onward and can come in, twice per year. The period usually lasts over three weeks. You must care for them during this time as they will mate ANY dog. Treatments and sprays are available, your VET will advise.
SIZE
Sizes vary, but for the confirmation Show Ring a Cavalier should weigh
between 12 & 18 pounds or 5 to 8 kilos. There is no regulation height but 12 to 13
inches at the shoulder is average. Larger dogs would be considered companion
animals rather than show specimens.
COLOURS
Cavaliers are bred in four colours.
BLENHEIM: Rich Chestnut markings on a Pearly White ground. The Markings on the head should be equally divided giving a mask effect and leaving room in the middle for the much prized "Blenheim Spot" - which may not always be present.
TRICOLOUR: A Black and White dog with Tan markings over the Eyes, on Cheeks, inside the Legs, behind the Elbows and on the underside of the Tail.
BLACK AND TAN: Absolutely Raven Black Coat with Tan Markings over the Eyes, on the Cheeks, inside the Legs, behind the Elbows and under the Tail.
RUBY: Whole coloured rich RED with NO white markings at all.
These dogs will return years of loving pleasure. They are excellent with children and the aged. They are FAMILY DOGS and to exclude them from close human contact will break their hearts. They were bred as 'comforters' and they carry that trait
